Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
